At sunrise, she crossed the orchard barefoot, leaving faint traces on the pale stone tiles. He had already gone but the lemon half on the table was still glistening, freshly cut. Next to it: an envelope he never opened, her handwriting soft, trembling, unfinished.

She paused beneath the olive branches, their shadows stretching like quiet questions. Her fingertips brushed a fallen petal. A reminder. A clue. A promise.

Later, in the Archive du Désir, the Archivist would collect these traces: the softened footprint, the citrus scent, the letter, the olive leaf pressed between pages.
